To get access to the attic, many homes will have a staircase leading up there. In other homes, however, another method of access is used to save space called a pull down attic ladder. While these will work well for attic access, they do have some shortcomings that you should bear in mind, especially when it comes to your safety.
Since your attic ladder is at an angle, you want to make sure to not overload it. If it is necessary to bring heavy items up in the attic, you shouldn’t carry them up the ladder, but instead have someone hand them to you when you’re at the top. If the ladder is too long, it could also cause too much strain on the joint when climbing it.
You should also check that the ladder is firmly attached. It needs to have sufficiently long screws attached to the surrounding wooden beams. If this is not the case, the whole mount could rip out from the weight.
