There is a time and a place for everything. You have probably heard that saying, and it is true in so many areas of life. Take for example the current situation with the COVID-19 outbreak. One of the first items that stores sold out of was hand sanitizer. While hand sanitizer works fairly well at killing viruses, why shouldn’t it be your go-to alternative for cleaning your hands?
The reason is that hand sanitizer only does one job – killing viruses and bacteria. While that is good, and potentially a life-saver, washing your hands with soap and hot water is much more effective. Why is that? Because hand-sanitizer doesn’t always kill all the harmful organisms on your hands, while soap both kills them and then washes them away. Soap will even make it difficult for the most stubborn viruses to stay attached to your hand.
This doesn’t mean that hand sanitizer doesn’t have a place, but it is no substitute for good old fashioned hand washing.
